Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
…………………………… India’s Missile Man Bharat Ratna Dr.Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born at Dhanushkodi in Rameswaram district of Tamil Nadu in India in 1938. “Do things yourself. Do not indulge in shortcuts by importing equipements “ the scientist thurndered after the Pokhran nuclear tests I 1998. A strong advocate of this dictum and having 2020 vision –India a developed country and Super power in the world , he distributed newspapers at a young age to help his household expenses.
He got abroad in 1963-64 when he was invited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to spend four months in the US . Abdul Kalam joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958. Later he moved to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he succeeded in putting the 35 kg Rohini I satellite on a low-earth orbit with the help of the SLV III (Satellite Launch Vehicle). After 19 fruitful years in ISRO, he returned to DRDO to head the country’s missile development programme, which culminated in the successful launch of the Agni and the Prithvi.
A Vegetarian and a teetotaller, Abdul Kalam recites the Quran and the Bhagvad Gita with equal ease. His modesty is evident from the fact that he gives all the credit to his colleagues and relatives. He has been felicitated with many national awards, including the Bharat Ratna.
