Amitabh Bachchan
……………………………… Born in 1942 a former stage actor, radio announcer and company executive, Amitabha Bachchan knew his density lay in films. Hence he bided his time, suffered rejection and continued to play a mute too (Reshma aur Shera), until Hrishikesh Mukherjee cast him as the brooding Dr Bhaskar in Anand (1970). Thereafter, there was no looking back for the actor who has to his credit the largest number of box office hits. It was his ubiquitous response of anger, visible in most of his films, which branded him the anti-hero in popular parlance and known as ‘Angry Young Man’.
Amitabh was always angry, be it Deewar, Zanjeer, Trishul, Shakti, Sholay, Kabhi Kabhi, Sharabi, Agneepath. A controversial tryst with politics followed by a temporary retirement from the glare did not however blur his image from the collective memory. The superstar of the 70’s has been trying to make a comeback in ‘90’s. But apart from Bade Niyan Chote Miyan, he has still to make an impact in his second innings after the debacle of Mritryudata, Lal Badshah, Major Saheb and Kohraam.
